Preparing your top and backing:
Square up your backing fabric and quilt top.
Backings need to be at least (and preferably not in great excess of) 4 inches larger (than your top) on all four sides. This extra few inches is necessary to attach your backing to the machine, and ensures your quilting is consistent and pucker-free. If your backing is not at least 4 inches wider on each side please sew on strips to extend it.
If it matters, place a safety pin at the center top of your quilt top and backing fabric. If the quilt design is directional a βtopβ may matter.
Press your top and backing and trim threads. Pay particular attention to removing dark threads under light fabrics.
